The ceiling fan is an economical option for circulation of air in enclosed areas. If you are planning to install a ceiling fan in your homes, you can purchase it at the best price from any store. Now, the main issue arises with the installation. The installation process is not hard at all. You just need to follow certain steps to accomplish the task. Instead of hiring an electrician to do the chores, follow these simple tasks to do-it-yourself (DIY).

Equipment Requirement

  • Ceiling Fan
  • Wire Connectors
  • Downrod
  • Fan Brace and Box Assembly
  • Switch

Tools Requirement

  • Tape Measure
  • Pliers
  • Wire Stripper
  • Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Nut Driver
  • Voltage Tester

Step 1
First of all, you need to determine the ceiling slope. This step is important to determine the length of the down rod that will be used with the ceiling fan. For this, you need to take the level and put it up against the ceiling. Measure the vertical distance from the level to the ceiling. Divide this number by 2 to get the drop over 12 inches of horizontal distance. This way, you can determine two aspects – blade diameter and the down rod length.

Generally, ceiling fans are designed for an 8-feet ceiling. The fan and motor assemblies take up to 12 inches. If the ceiling height is less, you can remove the down rod. The distance between the fan and the ceiling is necessary to draw air. Moreover, the blades should be closer to you for an effective circulation of air. By using the ceiling slope parameter, you can determine the blade diameter.

Step 2

Before proceeding with the ceiling fan installation, shut off the power supply. Now, using a hammer and a block of wood, you need to break the existing electrical box. You don’t need to remove the box. Just knock it down properly to create space. Pull out the electrical cable from the enclosure.

Step 3

Place the new metal box, specially designed for the ceiling fan. Pull out the wires through the cable clamp in the box. Fix the box over saddle screws and tighten the nuts using a nut driver. Rotate the grounding wire around the grounding screw and tighten the screw using the screwdriver.

Step 4

You have already determined the ceiling height and the ceiling slope. Now, you have to decide whether to use a nominal size down rod or a short down rod. After this, thread the electrical wire via down rod and attach the down rod on the mounting collar.

Step 5

Here, you need to make the wire connections. Connect the grounding wire from the box to the green wire on the bracket. Connect the white neutral wire from the fan motor with the neutral wire from the electrical box. Now, connect the black wire from the box with the blue and black wire from the fan motor. When you are done with these, wire connections are complete.

Step 6

Now place the fan canopy on the metal box and connect it using screws and screwdriver. Similarly, connect the fan blades with the motor housing using screws. If there are lights, connect the plugs from the lower and uppers switch housings. Use the screws to connect the housings. Tighten it using the screwdriver.

After this, test the fan whether it’s working or not. With this simple procedure, you can accomplish the procedure for ceiling fan connection. If you’re planning to buy a ceiling fan this summer, you can check it out from here for best fans available online.
